Sorting Hat • 4 September 2014

Hopefully everyone had a restful and rejuvenating Labor Day weekend with family, friends and fun! Last week was a terrific first week back, but I think we all needed an extra day off!

Thank you for making me feel so welcomed! I've had a great time meeting many of you in person, on the phone or via email - if you have a minute stop in a say hi that's great. I'm at LHUC everyday but Wednesday.

Middle School
Last week, I had a chance to talk with most of the students in the school as they were figuring our specialist schedules! Middle School students employed the use of a muggle "sorting hat" called Sign Up Genius and have been placed into specialists for the year. Most of their schedules should be set now. Middle School ensembles will meet Monday and Tuesday throughout the year.

Being that we only had one day (Tuesday) this week to meet and greet in grade-level specialists classes, I can honestly say I'm still learning student names. This week we went over the course Syllabus, Rental Agreements, classroom expectations and some of my quirky routines. Expectations, rituals and routines will continue to roll-out and present themselves for the remainder of fall quarter.

I'm sure, our students will quickly learn a few Needle-isms pretty quickly: effort creates ability, never use "try" in the past tense, anything worth doing is worth doing well, hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard and use creativity to make improvements not excuses.

If students rented an instrument for the summer they should bring it next week as we'll be playing. Also, I need new rental agreements for the year and to get a district bar code on each instrument.

Jazz Bands will start in October. Details about auditions and participation will be available soon.

4th & 5th Grades
This week 5th grade students received some paperwork about returning (and beginning) in band or orchestra. If they haven't returned the papers or somehow lost them please return them to me ASAP!

Next week, I will demonstrate the instruments for the 4th grade classes and provide them instrument selection forms. In the meantime there are some instrument selection guides on the Lake Harriet Band Site.

As always, if you have any ideas, suggestions, concerns or opportunities, don't hesitate to reach out. I can be reached most of the time via email or phone. As a general rule I try to respond as quickly as possible but within 24 hours, for sure.
